Mayors Call on State Lawmakers to Equitably Funding Early Voting

Press Conference:
Thursday, May 11 at 10 a.m.
North Steps of the State Capitol

HARTFORD, CT (May 9, 2023) — Mayors of major Connecticut cities are urging state lawmakers to equitably fund Early Voting, joining with a coalition of voting advocates. Hartford Mayor Luke BroninStamford Mayor Caroline Simmons, and Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim are joining advocates for a press conference on Thursday, May 11th at 10 a.m. on the North Steps of the State Capitol.

Mayors are joining advocates to raise concern about the need to fully and equitable fund early voting. Last November, Connecticut voters overwhelmingly voted to amend the state constitution to allow for early voting. While state lawmakers have decided on the number of days, funding for staff and resources remains a concern. Mayors are joining our call to action because without adequate funding, voters in our largest cities, who are disproportionately Black and Latine voters, will not have equal access to vote.

This coalition of voting rights groups, includes AARP, ACLU, Bridgeport GenerationNow Votes, Common Cause of CT, CT Citizens Action Group, CT League of Conservation Voters, CT Shoreline Indivisible,  SEIU State Council, The Connecticut Project Action Fund, and League of Women Voters.
