We were dismayed to learn that the top elected officials of at least two towns (Vernon and Wallingford) have chosen to make their locked absentee ballot drop-boxes accessible only inside their Town Halls or only when Town Hall is staffed. These drop-boxes were manufactured by an American company that has been in business since 1972 and supplies similar tamper-free boxes to such states as CA, SD, NB, IN, KY, AZ, UT, OR, MI, and MN. They were paid for out of federal CARES funds provided to CT in time of COVID.

Town election officials need to provide unfettered access to the process of voting by absentee ballot, including access to the absentee ballot drop-boxes 24/7. This protects voters’ AND election workers’ health and provides safe access for all eligible voters to exercise their right to vote.
