Thanks to the efforts of League member Mary Consoli and others, certain patients in nursing homes will now have access to emergency absentee ballots. Mary, a retired nurse who has worked on ballot access for many years, spoke with her Danbury representative, Bob Godfrey, about a man who injured his foot before an election and was denied access to an emergency ballot because he was placed in a nursing home instead of a hospital, and therefore did not qualify.
Representative Godfrey raised the issue with the Government Administration and Elections Committee co-chairs, asking them to bring Connecticut's law up to date. They responded. Mary and others testified at the public hearing. The committee voted favorably and unanimously. The House and Senate voted for the bill unanimously, becoming Public Act 24-34.
Governor Lamont signed the act into law on May 21st.
In the words of Representative Bob Godfrey:
That's a civics lesson. Mary brought a problem to the legislature. She and I proposed a solution for it. My colleagues responded. It has become law. Congratulations, Mary!
