One of the best communication tools our League has is the breadth of the circles of our members. That, coupled with the sterling reputation of the League, means that face to face, one to one contact with our circles is a great way to motivate people to make a plan to vote, become informed, and complete their ballots.
Toward that end, we have designed and printed not hundreds, but thousands of handouts to direct people to the VOTE411.org site, know the steps needed for getting their ballot and be informed about the local and state issues on which the League is recommending to vote.
The handouts are available on Janice’s front porch, near downtown Gainesville. League members are encouraged to come by, pick up handouts and distribute them to your circles and networks. One member took 50 to pass out to neighbors. One member ushers at the Hipp and took 100 to pass out.
With just a few short weeks before early voting starts, please consider your circles and how you can encourage people to vote. info [at] lwv-alachua.org (subject: Front%20Porch%20Supplies) (Email Janice) with “Front Porch Supplies” in the subject line to get the address. If you know where I live, come on down! No need to make an appointment. You’ll see the bin full of supplies.
In the meantime, check out our Voter Toolkit and this quick reference to the League recommendations:
Local Referendums
- Vote YES on the public utilities referendum. A Yes vote will return local decisions to local leaders, not governor appointees.
- Vote YES on county commission at-large elections. A Yes vote will return every voter's chance to choose every county seat.
- Vote YES on one mill tax for schools. Since 2008 voters have approved this tax to support teachers and programs in Alachua County.
State Amendment Recommendations
- Vote NO on Amendment 1. A no vote will prevent legalizing partisan politics in school boards.
- Vote YES on Amendment 4. A yes vote will allow women and doctors to make health care decisions, not politicians.
- Vote NO on Amendment 6. A no vote would keep public financing in place, allowing non-rich candidates to run.
