Professor of Political Sciences
Santa Fe College Social and Behavioral Sciences

Professor Beck earned a BA in Political Science and Journalism at Brooklyn College, part of the City University of New York, in 1983. He later earned an MA in Political Economy as Brooklyn College and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York Graduate School in 2000. His doctoral dissertation had to do with American social welfare policy, and particularly with problems caused by the 1996 welfare “reform” law. For 11 years, while working toward his latter degrees, he served on the staff of the Committee for Modern Courts, a non-profit court reform organization in New York that worked to improve the quality and fairness of the New York State court system, especially on matters concerning how the courts treat poorer New Yorkers. After earning his Ph.D. in 2000, he worked for two years as a visiting professor of Political Science at Elmira College in upstate New York and for two years as a visiting professor at Juniata College in central Pennsylvania. He has been a Political Science Professor at Santa Fe College since 2005. He has taught a wide variety of courses during his career. Donna Waller

LWV of Alachua County Nominating Committee Chair

I came to Gainesville in 1980 to pursue a doctorate in political theory and never left. I took a position as adjunct faculty at SFC in 1985 and retired as a full professor in 2012. My field of interest is American political thought, and at SFC I taught American National Government, State and Local Government, US History, and a variety of Honors courses. When I retired from Santa Fe, I began to be active with the League of Women Voters, as well as teaching Civics at the Senior Center and various classes for the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Oak Hammock. I think of myself now as an active participant in local politics and in the life of the Gainesville community.
