SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS IN THE SAVE ACTS

Ask Governor Newsom to Choose Mercy

The League of Women Voters of California opposes the death penalty and supports criminal justice policies that protect human rights and reduce injustice. Governor Gavin Newsom has less than 13 months left in officeWe are urging him to use his executive authority now to grant universal clemency – changing every death sentence in California to life in prison without the possibility of parole, so that no one can be executed.

Call to Action at last year's LWV California State Convention

On June 17-22, 2025,  the League of Women Voters of California gathered for our first all virtual State Convention. It was an energizing, empowering, and urgent time. We had three very impressive speakers who laid out the moment we're in, and what we need to do.  A single moment brought the (virtual) room to a standstill and sparked what may have been the first-ever Zoom standing ovation.

Dora Rose, LWVC Deputy Director and Chief Lobbyist, delivered one of the most powerful speeches we have ever heard from the League. She laid out what we are up against:

“The foundations of American democracy are under attack. Not in the abstract. Not someday. But now. Today. With military force deployed against civilians in our own backyard. We are witnessing a full-scale effort to erode the very principles that have guided this country for over two centuries. One person, one vote. Equal justice under law. Government by and for the people.”

Help fill Vote411 with information for voters from our local candidate

We're looking for volunteers to work on Vote411.org, the voter information website established by the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) as a "one-stop-shop" for election related information, providing nonpartisan information to the public with both general and state-specific information, including local candidate statements.  That's where you come in.

Each League asks their local candidates to answer specific questions in Vote411 so that all voters can see their positions.  Our job is to find contact information for all our eligible local candidates and encourage them to use this free service, following up as needed until they enter their information.  Since there will be dozens of city, school and special district candidates listed in August for the November ballot, this is a big job and we could use some help. If you would like to help, please contact us at lwvvc.info [at] gmail.com (subject: Vote411%20Volunteer) .
