One of the many highlights of our virtual Centennial Commemoration of the 19th Amendment – held Wednesday, August 26, on the 100th anniversary of a women’s right to vote – was the announcement that Marble House has been designated an official stop on the new National Votes for Women Trail.
It was fitting that Alva Vanderbilt Belmont, a passionate force who drove the Suffrage movement with rallies at her Marble House estate, was also inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
Gina Raimondo (left), the first woman elected Governor in the history of the state, provided a special pre-recorded message. And we were so grateful to all of our other guests, including RI Poet Laureate Tina Cane, keynote speaker Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, Poet, Activist and Educator Amber Rose Johnson, RI Heritage Hall of Fame Director Russell DeSimone, Jane Koster, President of the League of Women Voters of Rhode Island, and Theresa Guzman Stokes, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society.
