Join us for a virtual discussion of the powerful story Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. This bestselling book by Bryan Stevenson, a distinguished NYU law professor, offers the compelling story of the legal practice he founded to protect the rights of people on the margins of American society. The true story focuses on Stevenson’s efforts to free a poor black man in Alabama, who spent six years on death row for a murder he clearly did not commit, imprisoned on weak evidence. This book, and the feature film by the same name, both speak to the importance of confronting injustice.
Participants are encouraged to read the book and/or watch the film before the meeting.
The discussion will be moderated by Tom Kilbourn, ordained Episcopal priest and retired Joel Barlow High School English teacher.
This discussion group is created in partnership by the Mark Twain Library and the Redding League of Women Voters in an effort to offer our community an opportunity to continue the conversation on race. Join us for one conversation or many. In the months to come, this group will meet to explore issues surrounding race through a variety of mediums. The group is intended to be a forum where community members can safely exchange ideas, hear differing perspectives, and talk about race.
