2022: The League Turns 102 before Early Voting is a Reality in Connecticut

Valentine's Day 2022 was the 102nd birthday of the League of Women Voters.

For over 100 years, the League has been working to attain and secure voting rights for disenfranchised American citizens. And while we continue to fight for the passage of stalled federal voting rights legislation, we will not hesitate to call out laws and practices in any state that make it difficult for eligible voters to exercise their right to vote.

During the 2020 election, we experienced some of the highest voter turnout rates in our state history, as millions of Connecticut voters took advantage of expanded use of absentee ballots and convenient drop boxes to vote safely and securely during the pandemic. In a progressive state like Connecticut, many voters were unaware that they still need an excuse to vote by absentee ballot and that we do not allow for any in-person Early Voting, conveniences that our neighbor states already enjoy.

This November, Connecticut voters will have a chance to change that.

A question on the 2022 ballot will ask voters:

Shall the Constitution of the State be amended to permit the General Assembly to provide for early voting?

We at the League know that a “yes” vote on this question is the way forward for our state to expand access to the ballot and engage more folks in the democratic process. When it comes to improving life in Connecticut and facing inevitable setbacks, the best way to begin is to make sure that everyone with skin in the game is actively participating.

You’ll be hearing more about our specific initiatives in the days and months ahead. In the meantime, get involved, pay attention, and keep in mind that - as the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus said - “change is the only constant in life”.
