What can be done? LWVCT supports an Act to Declare A Climate Emergency in Connecticut. The Environment Committee has until February 25 to raise the bill.
An Act Declaring a Climate Emergency:

Requires the legislature to accelerate the reduction of Green House Gas Emissions through legislation, policy, plans, and budgets; and pursue grants and funding consistent with the Governor’s Executive Order on Climate.

Allows Connecticut to access additional Emergency Federal Funding.

Builds new partnerships and strengthens existing ones among New England States to work together on renewable energy strategies, including battery storage.

Supports the inclusion of young people in meetings to gain their perspectives regarding their future in the region.

Reaffirms Connecticut’s commitment to racial equity in its climate change mitigation efforts by working with organizations across the state.

Requires Connecticut to divest public funds from stocks and securities of companies that derive more than 10% of their revenue from the sale of fossil fuels.

Requires Connecticut to work with companies and workers in industries affected by transitioning away from fossil fuels to overcome disruptions and costs.
