LWVRI LEAGUE DAY AT THE STATE HOUSE - APRIL 26TH AT 4 PM

The League of Women Voters of RI’s League Day at the State House is an annual event each spring held in the Governor’s Reception Room.  This year the event will take place on Wednesday, April 26th from 4 - 6 p.m.

t he Voting Process will be the topic. There will be a Panel Discussion on the topic of Ranked Choice Voting.  Many cities and states have already embraced a variety of ways ‘that come closer to the goal of a majority rule’.  Ranked Choice Voting lets voters rank their choices based on individual preference.

The State of RI General Assembly describes in a February 2023 Press Release that a ‘seven member Senate Commission made up of five general offices and legislators was created to study the possibilities of non-plurality voting on elections for General Assembly and general officer candidates, including reviewing other states’ experiences with non-plurality voting and run-off elections and provided recommended changes in the law to implement non-plurality voting and run-off elections in Rhode Island’.  The Commission is to report its findings to the Senate by October 31.

The panelists presenting are Kathy Plancencia, Director of Elections/Department of State; a Board of Elections director; a member of our Legislature; and Dr. Adam Meyer, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Providence College. Dr. Meyer will moderate the discussion.  Questions from the audience are welcomed at end of the panel discussion.

Now is the time and place to learn more about how Ranked Choice Voting will fit into the way Rhode Island votes in the future.  The Rhode Island League of Women Voters hopes to see all of you at the State House in the historic Governor’s Reception Room on Wednesday, April 26th at 4 p.m.  Please bring friends.
