Come join our First Tuesday Talk on Zoom to hear about the important work ahead for the League of Women Voters in 2023-24.
LWV-Montgomery County President Gunin Kiran, Voter Services Chair Peggy Layne and Director of Programs Beth Obenshain will have just returned from the LWV-Virginia Convention in Williamsburg June 3rd and 4th and will share the convention highlights. Here is the Zoom link.
They will talk about the League’s statewide plans for voter education and turnout in this fall’s election, guidelines for candidate forums and questionnaires, VOTE411 online voter information, and more.
We’ll also talk about our local plans, the busy schedule of candidate forums for state and local races, and most importantly, volunteer opportunities for voter outreach and education.
The Convention delegates will vote on new and updated League positions proposed by four studies conducted in the past two years. A study on Education Funding in Virginia led by our Montgomery County League and the Washington County [Abingdon] League examined equity in statewide funding for public education. Virginia, which is among the 10th wealthiest states, ranks 41st in state funding for public schools. Other League studies focused on Money in Politics, Child Care and Environmental Justice. We’ll share new positions approved by delegates at the convention.
Now is a great time to look ahead and plan how you would like to be involved and support the League’s critical work as we approach an important election season that will determine the makeup of the Virginia General Assembly and our County School Board and Board of Supervisors and more.
