According to AAPD (The American Association of People with Disabilities) “There are over 38 million people with disabilities who are eligible to vote, but access barriers keep many disabled voters from accessing their right to vote.”  These barriers exist in many forms and education is one step in the process to eliminate them.

Bucks County Center for Independent Living and the League of Women Voters of Bucks County are partnering in two events to offer students and young adults with disabilities the opportunity to experience the voting process and learn about their rights as a voter.

“Voting is Your Superpower”
Monday, August 28, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 1 PM
Bucks County Community College – Main Campus
Rollins Center – Gallagher Room

Monday, September 11, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 1 PM
Bucks County Community College – Epstein Campus

Participants will be able to experience in-person voting using the county’s voting equipment, under the direction of the Bucks County Board of Elections.  Voter registration and educational materials on voting, including mail-in voting, and voting rights of people with disabilities will also be available.

Claire Leal, BCCIL Director of Services, said, “We know people have anxiety about new experiences.  We hope that by providing an opportunity for young adults to learn the voting process, ask questions and have a hands-on experience with the equipment that young adults with disabilities will feel more empowered, informed and confident about exercising their right to vote.”

Student groups interested in attending should contact Claire Leal, BCCIL at 484-655-2211 or claireleal [at] lvcil.org.  Community members are invited to participate and can register here.

The events are supported through a grant from Rev Up, a network of coalitions and partner organizations that works to foster civic engagement and protect the voting rights of Americans with disabilities.
