Nonpartisanship is a declaration of independence from political party influence and loyalty.
A common misconception we have heard is that being nonpartisan means remaining silent or neutral when it comes to the actions and policies of elected officials. People may confuse party neutrality with political neutrality but we want to be clear: this could not be further from the truth.
The League of Women Voters is, and has always been, a nonpartisan political organization. Our nonpartisan commitment means we never support or oppose any political party or candidate. Instead, we carefully study and adopt official positions on issues, focusing on good governance and protecting democracy. The League adopted many of its official positions decades ago, and although the political climate may shift more right or more left, our positions remain the same.
What does "nonpartisan" actually mean?
The Merriam-Webster definition is simple and powerful:
non•par•ti•san /nänpardizǝn/ Adjective: free from party affiliation, bias, or designation. Synonyms: impartial, equitable, equal.
As an organization dedicated to making democracy work, the League is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. Supporting an inclusive democracy is not, and has never been, a neutral political position.
It is a core part of our mission to speak out if an elected official—regardless of their party affiliation—proposes policies that:

Erode the norms of our democracy, such as freedom of expression, due process, equal protection of the law, humane treatement, etc.

Hinder government accountability and transparency.
It is the League's duty to speak out, in accordance with our established positions. This stance is the foundation of the LWVUS Unite and Rise 8.5 initiative, which is focused on defending democratic principles against all threats.
The role of the League at No Kings 2
As a national partner for No Kings 2, the League's presence in Hartford—along with an estimated 12,000 attendees— and at gatherings around the state was a direct expression of our mission.
The League is committed to a system of government that is "of the people, by the people, for the people"—a founding principle that transcends any political partisanship. While recognizing that "our democracy is facing a five-alarm fire" with the Trump Administration's unprecedented, breathtaking assault on our democratic systems and fundamental rights, we attended to specifically focus on two key areas:

Defending Voting Rights and Access: We advocate for policies that make it easier for all eligible citizens to register and cast a vote, ensuring a strong and accessible democracy.

Providing Nonpartisan Election Information: We provide accurate election information to the public about the November 4 municipal elections, empowering voters to make their voices heard.
This kind of outreach exemplifies our core mission: to empower voters and defend democracy. Defending our system of government is not a partisan issue; it is a civic duty that should unite all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
