Youth Civic Engagement Webinar:
How to Testify — Writing & Delivering Effective Public Testimony
hosted by the Connecticut Secretary of the State’s Office
Do you know students who want to make a change but aren’t sure where to start?
Are they curious about how to share their opinions with the state government?
Do they feel nervous about speaking to elected officials, or would they rather write instead?
Everyone has a role to play in our democracy, and this interactive webinar is designed to help young people find theirs.
This session will help students across Connecticut learn how to confidently and effectively share their voices in public hearings and civic spaces—no prior experience required. We understand that some students are more comfortable writing, while others prefer speaking. No matter how they choose to make their voices heard, this will help guide them.
What students will learn:
-
How to write a strong, persuasive written testimony
-
Simple tips for delivering oral testimony with confidence
-
Common mistakes people worry about, and how to avoid them
-
How the legislative process works and where youth voices fit in
During the session, two nonpartisan bills will be discussed as real examples:
-
Pre-registration of 16-year-olds to vote
-
The Civic Seal Program
Students will have the opportunity to apply what they learn by forming their own perspectives and practicing testimony—either in support of or opposition—in a supportive, skills-based environment.
This is also a great opportunity for students to connect with peers from across the state, build confidence engaging with legislators, and see how youth voices can drive real change.
