How Voting Works (in-person)

You’ve registered to vote. You’ve gone to the polls. Then what? How does voting actually work? Join us for a presentation with a CT College professor and the Registrar of Voters.

Learn who runs elections in the United States, which processes are specific to Connecticut, and why we have a decentralized, highly varied nature of election administration.  We’ll discover why local election officials are the subject matter experts and heart of election administration in the U.S., and also talk about the security measures every jurisdiction takes to make sure information / ballots are safe and secure in the registration, casting, canvassing, and certification processes.

Mara Suttmann-Lea, Ph.D., is an associate professor of American politics at Connecticut College who specializes in election administration, local election officials, and voter education in American elections. They will speak about how elections are administered across the United States and what that looks like in Connecticut, including the security measures election officials take to safeguard the process from registration to certification.
