On June 30, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court took up Moore v. Harper, a gerrymandering power grab by the North Carolina’s state legislature. Moore will make it even easier for politicians to restrict the vote, draw gerrymandered maps, and cast doubt on election results, making it harder to turn public demands into public policy, from higher wages to healthcare for all. State and local advocates are barnstorming North Carolina holding #MapOurFuture tour to build our movement and defeat this latest radical move from Raleigh.
Register for the in-person event at 1:30 on Sunday August 21 here and for the online event at 3:00 on Sunday August 21 here. Speakers from Southern Coalition for Social Justice and other League partners will provide information on this case, which could effectively end state court challenges having to do not only with gerrymandering but with anything affecting our federal (biennial) elections. The speakers will also lay out the plan to push back against this power grab, which, if successful, would represent a setback to our democracy even greater than the loss of LWV/Common Cause v Rucho (which declared partisan gerrymandering to be just fine and dandy, as far as the US Supreme Court is concerned).
*If you are unable to attend virtually at 3pm, consider signing up for our in-person at 1:30pm! Go to Map Our Future Tour for more details.
