To find out the answers to these questions you will want to attend this webinar session sponsored by the LWVNC Tax Policy Review Committee. Alexandra Forter Sirota, Executive Director, NC Budget & Tax Center will be the guest speaker. This is the first in a series of monthly sessions to work to member agreement on a revised LWVNC tax policy position.
State tax structures include three main types of state and local taxes:
- Personal income tax

Paid by taxpayer to the state

Is a percent of income, the percent may be related to ability to payales and use tax
- Sales and use tax
- Paid by retailer to the state or local jurisdiction
- Is not related to income or ability to pay
- The use tax is paid by the taxpayer with their income tax

Property tax

Paid by property owner

Is paid by property owner, is not directly related to ability to pay

Is an indirect tax for renters
