Metro Columbus - Democracy in Action

Read more about our LWVMC Honorees and their exemplary contributions to Metro Columbus  communities with compassion and democratic means.

Recipients of the Democracy In Action Award are recognized for outstanding participation in civic affairs.  Recipients are not necessarily members of the League, but they embody, as does the League, a strong belief that our democratic system of government works best when citizens are active and informed.  Democracy In Action Award winners demonstrate a long-term commitment to and zeal for increasing the level of political activism and knowledge within the community.

"Democracy in Action" is our major fundraising event.  The Award ceremony provides the opportunity to come together with friends, supporters, and community leaders to recognize outstanding individuals and groups. It also helps us sustain the very actions that advocate for foundational democratic principles. Your support goes directly to the League's work to protect and defend our democracy. Together we ensure our elections are free, fair and accessible; protect our environment; and reduce the influence of money in our elections.

2024 Honoree was Reverend John Edgar. He was responsible for building a Church for All people that has achieved a positive impact on the surrounding community. In addition to offering daily worship services, the church offers a number of services that are beneficial such as a free store where people are welcome to come grab essentials items like household goods, clothing, and food. They also have many volunteers who help out with their affordable housing program, after school program, and even offer job opportunities. They offer free bikes for people who have trouble getting to work. They offer a healthy eating and living program that helps people improve their mental and physical health. It has motivated many people who sustain the church and volunteer their time.
