Unite and Rise 8.5:
A Campaign to Defend Democracy
Are we really in a Constitutional crisis? What can we do?
The League defines a Constitutional Crisis as:
“When the executive, the legislative, or judiciary branches cannot or will not adequately protect the US Constitution, when there are explicit attempts to dismantle a functional democracy within any of the three branches, or when any level of federal government takes action to destroy democratic institutions in a manner that intentionally or purposefully jeopardizes the US Constitution.”
When these events occur, the constitution is deemed at the highest serious risk and warrants full-scale action by ALL of us to preserve and protect democratic institutions and civil society. The League of Women voters has launched an initiative to mobilize 8.5 million voters to defend our Constitution and the Rule of Law through advocacy, civic education, and engagement. What Can We Do?
- Tell Congress to End the Shutdown: The government has been partially shutdown since October 1. While Congress continues to get paid, the American people, including some of our most vulnerable community members, don’t have their most basic needs met. This is simply unacceptable. Send a letter to Congress and tell them to get Back to Work!!

- Protect Our Right to Vote: Tell your Senators to oppose the anti-voter SAVE Act. The SAVE Act would require citizenship documentation to register to vote even though voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. If passed into law, one of the largest groups of people who could be disenfranchised from voting is married women who changed their last name.
- Tell Congress not to gut crucial programs like Medicaid.
- Raise your voice about illegal deportations: join mobilizations around immigrant rights and due process with organizations like Immigrant Rights Action, The Welcome Project, National Partnership for New Americans, United We Dream, and others.
- Commit to action: Sign our commitment to Unite and Rise for democracy
- Take action by voting and volunteering to ensure our freedom to vote is protected.
- Mobilize in nonviolent efforts to hold government accountable
- Stay informed about the policies and decisions that affect us all, combat disinformation, and amplify the voices and stories of those most impacted.
