We are asking you to advocate for this important legislation with your local representative. Please let your rep know that RI is one of only 10 states which does not require civics for high school graduation. And then tell your rep that you support in this legislation. H 5028 is scheduled for vote during the House Floor session Thursday, April 15, 4pm.
House Bill 5028 mandates a semester of civics education as a requirement for high school graduation and provides for teacher training and funding for the curriculum. The League of Women Voters also endorses the definition of proficiency in civics described by the legislation and the acquisition of cognitive skills necessary to access, analyze, debate and evaluate various sources of information. In addition, the legislation requires each student to complete a civic engagement project involving research on a local community issue, engagement of government to influence the issue, and a summary demonstrating the process and outcomes.
Please email or call your state representative TODAY, identify yourself as their constituent and/or League member. Ask them to support H5028.
You can find the email for your representative on the Secretary of State's Voter Information center.
