In late November 2024, Providence’s new Comprehensive Plan was approved by the City Council and signed by Mayor Smiley.

The update of Providence’s Comprehensive Plan has been completed. See the link below for a copy of the updated plan, which will guide development of the City for the next 10 years. Most of the goals are aspirational - improve public transportation, expand greenspace, etc. The principal substantive changes allow increased density in order to expand housing units. This includes permitting ancillary housing units in outbuildings, changing the R-2 zoned areas to R-3, permitting more units in each parcel and reducing the parking requirements. The last provision assumes that residents will rely less on cars and more on public transportation, a big change in lifestyle that has raised skepticism among many. There is also concern among residents that demolition of a structure is permitted before there has been approval of new construction (including design review).
