This year LWVRI (State League and Newport League) is partnering with AP (Associated Press) to assist with reporting poll results on the night of the state's Primary Election, September 9th. The reporting of election results is a fundraiser for the League. The AP donates $75 to the League for each person who reports in results. You do not need to be a League member to participate. So, feel free to share.
Essentially, you are working as what’s called a Stringer for the AP. It’s a simple process. You will get more detailed instructions from AP staff, but here is a basic rundown of the process:
1: You arrive at the polling place about a half-hour before closing on Wednesday, Sept. 9
.
2: Once the polling place closes, the official in charge will read out the numbers for each candidate on your AP ballot. (Not all races are reported to the AP).
3: You will write down the numbers directly onto the supplied AP ballot.
4: Then, call an 800 number where a friendly person will take down the numbers for said candidates, and your report will instantly be on the AP website.
If you are interested, please email fayezuckerman [at] gmail.com with your preferred town to do the reporting, and your cell phone number. (You don’t need to do the reporting alone.) You can go with a significant other and/or friend but only one person reports to the AP.
If interested, please respond to Faye by 5 p.m. on August 21. She will confirm with you a polling location. Faye will then connect you with Amy Knowles, who is taking charge of the process. She will be sending you more detailed instructions. credentials, ballot and other related information.
Note: The Newport League is also participating in the fundraiser. If you are a member of the Newport League and plan to volunteer, let Faye know. She can make sure the donation goes to the correct place.
Please reach out to fayezuckerman [at] gmail.com with any questions. Make sure you include your cell number.
