League of Women Voters South County Presents "Shining a Light on The Amazing Life of Caty Greene.”
WESTERLY, RI — As part of the nationwide America 250 semiquincentennial, the League of Women Voters South County offers the second in a series of special presentations that focus on women during the Revolutionary era on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park..
Local historian Mark Murphy will present “Shining a Light on the Amazing Life of Caty Greene.” Catharine "Caty" Littlefield Greene was the wife of Major General Nathanael Greene, one of George Washington's most trusted military commanders. While General Greene's military accomplishments helped secure American victory in the South, Caty actively supported her husband, the Continental Army, and the cause of American independence beyond the typical role of women of her time.
Mark Murphy brings her remarkable, but little known story, from the shadows of history to the present as one of the most influential women of the Revolutionary War and the early years of independence. The presentation offers a fascinating look at the personal sacrifices, resilience, and leadership of one woman whose contributions helped shape the course of American history.
"America's story is not only the story of generals and statesmen," said League President Christine Martone, it is also the story of women like Catharine Greene, whose courage, perseverance, and dedication helped sustain the struggle for independence and continue throughout her life to nurture the birth of the American experiment. As we commemorate America's 250th anniversary, it is important that we remember and honor these contributions."
The program is free and open to the public. All are welcome.
