The chaos of recent years has underscored the importance of citizen’s understanding what government does and how it works, as well as the prime importance of informed citizen participation. The League not only supports but demands expanded civics education for all students and at all levels of a student’s education in all RI schools. The League testified in strong support of H 5028 and S 76, which would establish a mandate for civics education in High School, and members Jane Koster and Martha Frutchey joined a commission established by RIDE to work on developing a curriculum. The League also testified in support of a constitutional amendment to mandate that RI provide an adequate education for its students, and to make this mandate judicially enforceable. H 5421 and S 205
