The League of Women Voters South County is proud to announce the winners of an essay contest to celebrate Women’s History Month.  The contest focused on ninth grade students, including those in home school and public and private high schools, to create an essay about a woman in American History whose contributions and achievements have had a positive impact on society. The essays were reviewed by a local author as well as a League member.  The top winners received a $100 gift from the local League Chapter during a surprise visit to their schools on March 13, 2023.  The winners include Katelyn Arnold and Ocean Lombard from Westerly High School, and Bridgett Flynn from Narragansett High School.

Through the essay contest, the South County League’s goal was to draw attention to the contributions that have been made by women in science, industry, politics, social services, health, the arts, and many other disciplines. The Westerly Sun and The Independent have graciously agreed to publish the winning essays submitted by these talented students. The League hopes that these essays will provide a glimpse into the women that were chosen.
