Final Call and Announcing Keynote Speaker

The League of Women Voters of Rhode Island hopes to see all members participating in our 2019 Convention on Saturday, June 8, at the Jamestown Philomenian Library, 26 North Road from 10-1:30 p.m. Please see amended Agenda, Nominating Committee report and 2019 proposed Budget below.

The Bylaws of the LWVRI (Article VIII) state that all members of the League are invited and urged to attend convention, but only delegates will be allowed to vote. All members of the Board of Directors are voting delegates. Members of Local Leagues and MAL members will caucus at convention to choose delegates. Each League is allowed one delegate for every 10 members or major fractions thereof. The president of each local League is also a delegate. Board members may have only one vote. Although only delegates will be voting, all League members participate in Convention. Attend to reflect on our program, our process of study and consensus and to share ideas with members throughout RI.

The LWVRI is pleased to announce that Lane Talbot Sparkman will be our guest speaker at Convention 2019. She will speak at 11 a.m. Ms. Sparkman is the Associate Director and Coordinator for RI Department of State's Education and Public Programs. She will address the current state of civic education in Rhode Island. One of the League's prioritized issues has been to promote the right of all students access to an equal education under the law and to further civic education within the public school curriculum. With a new RI Commissioner of Education appointed this month and a revised RI Legislative Commission on Civic Education meeting after many years of inactivity, we are fortunate that Ms. Sparkman will be with us.

Please note a time change within the Agenda. We will adjourn at 11 a.m. for our guest speaker and then reconvene.

Plan to bring a bag lunch. Let's share ideas and strengthen relationships with fellow League members.

Please contact your local League president, a MAL leader, or Jane Koster so that we can have materials available for all.
