The 1619 Project, by Nikole Hannah-Jones, is the Pulitzer Prize-winning book examining the legacy of slavery in our country.  It has been the center of a great deal of controversy around the country, and there is currently a bill in the South Carolina legislature banning its use in any of the state’s public schools.

The state League’s working group on racial justice will be leading the discussion on the book at our April public policy luncheon.  Pastor Karen Woods, lead for the Racial Justice working group, and Lady June Cole, president of the Columbia League, will be facilitating the discussion.

In preparation, if  you don’t have time to read the book, they are proposing that we listen to the series of six 1619 podcasts (ranging from 29 to 42 minutes) accessible from the New York Times or wherever you access your podcasts.  We will focus mainly on:

• Episode 1 – The Fight for a True Democracy
• Episode 2 – The Economy That Slavery Built
