The Problem

The League of Women Voters of Connecticut has worked in conjunction with other voters’ rights groups for over a decade to garner both the legislature’s and voters’ approval of Early Voting in Connecticut.  The Governor himself said that this would “improve the ability of voters to cast their ballots and enable more people to participate in our democracy.” However without funding for education and training this right will not fulfill its promise to our state.

What needs to happen:

The Secretary of the State (SOTS) needs funding to provide monies to the municipalities to train workers for early voting and to provide the services required for this important right. The SOTS also need funds to provide information and education for both how to vote early and for the No Excuse Absentee Ballot Referendum which is on the ballot in November. Without these resources it is likely that early voting will not provide the access to the polls that was envisioned by all of those who fought long and hard for this right.

Tell your state senators and representatives to push for funding!

Subject: Funding for Early Voting and education for No Excuse Absentee Ballot referendum
Dear [Senator/Representative] [name]:
I am writing to you in urge you to prioritize funding for Early Voting rollout and education for the No-Excuse Absentee Ballot referendum.

We know that last year the Governor and the representatives who worked to pass this legislation said they were sure that the government would provide the funding needed to make sure that early voting was implemented appropriately.  The Governor said “We are partners with our municipalities and we are doing our part as well.” Providing no funding for early voting does not allow for a path for success and greatly dims the promise that the state has made to its voters.

Also at stake is funding for education for the No Excuse Absentee Ballot Referendum this November.  We need to make sure people understand what this referendum is and how it effects their right to vote.  The League of Women Voters works tirelessly to ensure that the process of voting is available to as many eligible citizens as possible and that the process is clearly understood.

Thank you,
