Action Alert - League of Women Voters (Vote for Your Rights)

Action Alerts

Since the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v. Holder gutted the Voting Rights Act (VRA), at least 31 states have enacted 114 voting laws that make it harder to vote, with the burden falling hardest on Black voters and other voters of color.  We need a fully restored VRA to defend our democracy and protect the freedom to vote.

Tell your members of Congress to protect the freedom to vote and support the passage of the JLVRAA.

For 20 years, Connecticut voters have led the way in showing what fair elections can look like. Let’s not allow one rushed decision to undo all that progress. Email or call Governor Lamont today and urge him to protect the independence of the State Elections Enforcement Commission (SEEC) from political interference by vetoing SB 1405 as it is written now.

Before Friday, urge your legislators to do everything they can to ensure that the Connecticut Voting Rights Act (CTVRA) stays in the budget. The CTVRA is the nation’s most comprehensive state-level voting rights act. Yet, Connecticut voters face persistent barriers to equal participation for voters of color and people whose first language isn’t English. To remain the national leader and implement the CTVRA, Connecticut must adequately fund its protections in the 2025 biennial budget.

April 22 updates on the SAVE Act, President Trump's Executive Order, and Funding for Connecticut's Elections. Connecticut voters can take action by 1) mobilizing friends in other states to urge Senators to vote no on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE) Act, and 2) pushing for Connecticut legislators to fund our elections and protect and expand voter access.

Please submit testimony for SB 17! The League of Women Voters of Connecticut supports funding to municipalities to cover their costs for early voting, as the requirements placed on towns for early voting caused unfunded mandates in many locations in 2024. But we can do better - municipalities should receive funds to support early voting and ensure that our elections are accessible to all Connecticut voters.

H.B. 7212, an Act Concerning the Trust Act, represents an important step in protecting Connecticut’s immigrant communities, but it does not fully address the breadth of challenges our immigrant community members are facing. Submit testimony ahead of the March 19 Public Hearing in support of strengthening the Trust Act.

Just over one month into the current Administration, the President has issued a series of executive orders and directed actions that violate the law and Congress’ power. Congress must act now to restore the stability of our nation before it’s too late.

Urge your members of Congress to stand up for our democracy.
