On April 5, millions of citizens across the country rallied to oppose the growing threat of autocracy and the unprecedented power grab by the executive branch. Delaware was not left out of the action, with marches throughout the state. Sussex County voters and LWVSCDE members made a strong showing in Dover and Rehoboth Beach at the first Hands Off! rally in Delaware on April 5. LWVUS is part of the Hands Off! coalition. The Rehoboth and Dover rallies were organized primarily by Indivisible of Southern Delaware and Indivisible of Central Delaware, respectively.
LWVSCDE members met on April 4th at the Rehoboth Beach Panera for a Design-a-Sign session, where we learned that President Barb brings mad skills to our chapter, including cutting letters and starbursts out freehand. (We cleaned up the mess before leaving Panera.)
The Rehoboth Beach rally welcomed a reported (and astounding) 1,000 people at the bandstand (photo above), where they heard speakers such as Claire Snyder Hall (Rep. District 14), followed by a march on the mile-long Boardwalk.
Meanwhile, several hundred people, including LWVSCDE President Barb Hedges-Goettl and members Pat Newcomb and Martha Rothenberg, gathered in Dover to oppose the threat of autocracy in America. Keynote speaker Congressional Representative Sarah McBride inspired the crowd with a "hands off" call and response. A march around the capital mall area followed the speeches and songs; locals greeted marchers with friendly car horns along the way.
