Your Action is Needed Now: Election bill would further restrict community-based voter registration groups, adds hurdles to voting.
Senate Bill 7050 will be heard in the Senate Fiscal Policy Committee on Thursday (April 20) at 10:30 a.m. (ET).
A 98-page bill which creates more barriers to conducting voter-registration drives, modifies use of mail-in ballots, implements steeper fines for community based registration groups (like the League) that make any wrong steps, and adds a potential that voters could see their ballots trashed is on the move in the Florida Senate.
The proposal (Senate Bill 7050) reduces the number of days a third-party voter-registration organization has to deliver an application and drastically increases fines for any mistakes or delivery mishaps.
There’s more: Voter registration organizations will be forced to provide a receipt to each applicant upon accepting possession of the application. And the League and other voter registration groups will have to re-register with the state every single election cycle.
This bill also sets transparency back a decade by allowing political committees to file financial reports every three months, not every month as they must now.
Plus, the bill would require all first-time Florida voters who have never been issued a current and valid Florida driver license or a voter ID card or a Social Security number to vote in person the first time.
Let's be clear: Senate Bill 7050 is a punitive assault against groups, most of them staffed by volunteers, that try to register voters.
This bill is an attack on the League's work and all of Florida's voters.
We're urging every Florida League member to contact the members of the Florida Senate Fiscal Policy Committee and encourage them to vote "NO" on Senate Bill 7050.
