Get Involved: Join our Committees

Serving the communities of Carol Stream, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton, and Winfield.

Welcome! We love welcoming members to help support our mission. You may use your membership to become more involved in the communities we serve. Join a committee, become an observer, or help with special projects. We’re happy you’re supporting the League with your membership. If you’re able to volunteer your time to do the important work of the League, here are ways you may help. Most of our committees and events are meeting virtually currently, although that may change. Please check the League’s calendar for times and locations.

League membership is open to all genders/identities. To be a voting member of the League, you must be at least 16 years old. The League offers student memberships and memberships for two members in the same household at discounted rates.

Candidate Events CommitteeDuring the pandemic, we moved our forums online LWV Video Voter Guideto create our popular Video Voter Guide for general and local election cycles. We invite all candidates to submit a video to introduce themselves, to answer three questions we provide that pertain to their office, and to make a closing statement. Because the League is considered the expert in presenting non-partisan, informative candidate forums, we also conductmeet and greet candidates candidate and referendum forums, virtually and in person. Often, we partner with other local Leagues to present these forums. The committee needs to contact candidates, to develop questions relating to the offices, to upload the videos, and more. The members also maintain a spreadsheet of the candidates. If you’re interested in helping with the forums or video guides, please send an info [at] wheatonlwvil.org (subject: Candidates%20Events%20Committee%20Question) (email). Susan Booton, Chair

Observer Corps: The Observer Corps Committee is looking for members to become part of our local Observer Corps. Monitoring local government meetings is a long-established practice of the League of Women Voters. Trained observers at our localObserver training image units of government such as the DuPage County Board and Committees, City Council, Board of Education, Park District, Library, etc., help inform citizens about current issues and their governments to empower community members to take action and help promote government transparency and accountability. An observer is an individual who attends or watches a public governmental meeting, notes what happens at the meeting, and reports back to the League and the community. Observers keep elected and appointed officials on notice; they let them know that someone is watching what decisions are being made and how they are being made.

LWV of Wheaton attends as many meetings as there are volunteers, and we would love to have Observers for all our communities’ meetings! In person is the better way to attend, but some community agencies videotape their meetings, so it is possible to view a meeting online and create an observer report. If you’re interested in participating as an Observer, you’ll be trained to become an observer. info [at] wheatonlwvil.org (subject: Observer%20Corps%20Training) (Find out) when the next Observer training is. Catherine Franczyk and Missey Wilhelm, Co-chairs
