On June 15-16, all five of Montana’s living governors of both parties and hundreds of Montana citizens paid tribute to the 100 citizen/delegates who crafted what is understood to be the best state Constitution in the nation.  In addition to celebrating the ten remaining living delegates, the 90 who have previously passed were recognized by a ceremonial roll call answered often by their descendants.  There were discussions and recognitions of Native Americans and the Constitution and also seven substantive panels discussing Montana history and important aspects of the Constitution:

  • ·         “The Beginning” — How the 1972 Constitution Came to Be.
  • ·         “Let the Sunshine In” — The Citizens’ Right-to-Know and Participate in government at all levels.
  • ·         “The Basic Rule of Law: The Backbone of a Constitution.”
  • ·         “Natural Resources, Water and the Right to a Clean and Healthful Environment.”
  • ·         “Montana’s Unique and Comprehensive Declaration of Rights.”
  • ·         “Revenue and Taxation.”
  • ·         “Education and Public Lands.”

Those panels were concluded with a session looking to the future given the current divisiveness in both Montana and America: “Hope and Vision for Future Generations under the Montana Constitution.”

Video of the activities in the Convention Hall (House Chambers) can be found at these two links, one for each day.
