Justice-Impacted Montanans Voting Rights

You lose the right to vote in Montana when you are incarcerated because of a felony conviction. If you are being held in a correctional facility, you cannot vote. However, in Montana, your right to vote is automatically restored after you are released from incarceration. If you are on parole, probation, or in a pre-release center you may register and vote.

You are eligible to vote if you are:
      • a U.S. citizen,
      • at least 18 years old on or by the next election,
      • living in Montana for 30 days before the next election,
      • not serving a felony conviction in a penal institution nor have been found to be of unsound mind by a court.

Complete the Montana Voter Registration Application and drop off, mail, fax or email your application to your local county elections office. Find your county elections office loctation and contact information here: County Elections Offices

Catalyst Montana Jail-Based Voter Registration Program

In 2026, the League of Women Voters of Montana received a grant from the League of Women Voters Education Fund to provide voter services to eligible people who were formerly incarcerated in Montana. Partnering with Catalyst Montana, the Montana League helps those who are justice-impacted to understand their right to vote, how to reactivate their voting status, help them register them to vote, and share resources to help them regain their engagement in civic life.
