In this new year, 2026, Americans across the country will commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. We certainly have much to celebrate. But as we join in the festivities this year, we also should recognize the many challenges facing America today. These include deep political and social divisions, widening income inequality, and public skepticism as to whether government can work for everyday people. Are there ways we can strengthen our democracy so it can be resilient in the years ahead?

The League of Women Voters has long recognized that the quality of voters’ civic education is fundamental to the success of American democracy. For many of us, that civic education first took root in classrooms where we learned the underlying principles of good government as well as our rights and responsibilities as citizens. Yet, in recent years, Americans’ civic knowledge seems to be in decline, and some recent surveys point specifically to a concerningly low level of civic literacy among young people.

On May 20, 2025, Bucks County voters will have the opportunity to participate in the Municipal Primary to select party candidates for various local and county offices. Municipal elections do matter! In many ways, the county and local offices on municipal ballots can have a greater impact on the quality of life for our families and communities, especially in such areas as education, public safety, infrastructure, and local services.

For many communities, being counted is not just a matter of data. It is a matter of recognition, representation, and resources. Yet for Arab Americans, this recognition has been deferred for decades and obscured under the category of whiteness, which fails to capture who we are. It is worth examining how we celebrate Arab American identity and how our institutions are coming dangerously close to rendering it invisible.

Over the last 16 months under the Trump administration, people of color and marginalized communities across the country have faced both overt and subtle forms of targeting and discrimination at the federal level. One of the less visible examples is how the federal government has handled updates to federal race and ethnicity data standards, particularly as they relate to the upcoming 2030 Census.
