Constitutional Amendment - Right to an Adequate Education

The House Committee on State Government and Elections will hold a hearing Wednesday, April 5th for H 5771 which proposes a constitutional amendment to provide all Rhode Island residents with a guarantee of equal educational opportunities that are “adequate, equitable and meaningful”. This resolution has already been passed by the senate. If passed by the House, the question would go to the voters of Rhode Island in 2024.

This resolution as written would establish the responsibility of Rhode Island’s government including the assembly, the department of elementary and secondary education, and other government agencies and officials charged with educational responsibilities to ensure the equal educational opportunities. Passage would enable the all Rhode Islanders to achieve at high levels and to become lifelong learners, productive workers, and responsible citizens.
