Collaborating with Sequoia High School, the League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County recently organized a dynamic civic engagement event to educate and inspire senior students. Social Study Chair Danny Bliss, teacher Ashley Gray, and seven more teachers played instrumental roles in facilitating the two-day event, held on January 11 and 12, from 11:45 am to 12:30 pm. 

The League of Women Voters brought its expertise to the forefront, assisting teachers in delivering informative presentations, engaging worksheets, and a sample ballot to give students hands-on experience and understanding of the voting process. The event, attended by 400 seniors across 15 classes, was designed to instill a sense of civic responsibility and empower students to participate actively in the democratic process. 

Recognizing the significance of voter registration, each classroom witnessed the registration of 3-4 students, totaling approximately 20 registrations. This promoted active participation and encouraged students to discuss meaningful civic duties and responsibilities.

Capturing the vibrant atmosphere of the event, photographs were taken and shared on social media platforms, highlighting the commitment of both the League of Women Voters and Sequoia High School to promoting civic education and engagement.

The event's success was made possible by the collaborative efforts of eight dedicated volunteers, exemplifying the community spirit that underlies the League's mission to encourage civic responsibility.

Looking forward, the League of Women Voters and Sequoia High School expressed their commitment to continuing this impactful collaboration. Plans are underway to return for a similar event ahead of the General Election in November, ensuring a sustained focus on fostering long-term civic engagement among students. The League hopes to expand this program to other Sequoia Union High School District public high schools.
