All our actions, advocacy, and education are based on support for League Positions and League Principles.
Advocacy
Advocacy refers to supporting or promoting a particular cause, idea, policy, or group of people to bring about change, influence decisions, or address specific issues.
The League will advocate for a particular issue after researching and discussing the issue. Our advocacy is unbiased and looks at the effect of a specific issue on every citizen. We seek fair and balanced ways to support various local, state, and national positions.
At a local level, you can review the League's position on the following issues:
Local/County Positions
Joint Position with LWV Palo Alto
State and National Positions
- Positions of the League of Women Voters of California
- Positions of the League of Women Voters - National
Action
To reach [the League’s aim], study is not enough, becoming experts is not enough. Good citizenship requires not only knowledge but ability to act.
~Marguerite Wells, President, League of Women Voters, 1934-44
Action taken on legislative bills and ballot measures can include contacting elected government officials or aligning ourselves with like-minded, unbiased organizations.
There are various ways to get involved with the League's action efforts. Click on the link below to learn about our committees and how to get involved.
Committees—Joining one of LWV South San Mateo's Committees is the easiest way to meet fellow League members and become active in educating and engaging the public about the specific committee's efforts. Local topics for the committees can include Climate Change, Housing, Transportation, and more. |
|
Vote with the League—Before an election cycle, the League may take a position on a particular ballot measure or initiative. Once the League's position is announced, members are encouraged to join and vote to support it. |
|
Action Alerts—LWV California or LWV National may contact our League members to provide support on a bill or ballot measure. Members are asked to email or call their state or national government officials to vote to support the League's position. Contact Government Officials—Let your voice be heard! If you feel an issue needs the attention of your local, state, or federal elected officials, contact them directly and state your concerns and opinions. |
