Narragansett, RI — As part of the nationwide recognition of Election Workers Hero Day on November 2, the League of Women Voters – South County invites the public to a free community screening of the short documentary film The Officials on Monday, November 3, at 6:30 PM at the Maury Loontjens Memorial Library, 25 Pier Marketplace, Narragansett.

Political violence in the United States has been rising in recent years, and election officials—dedicated public servants who safeguard the democratic process—have increasingly faced threats and intimidation. The Officials documentary takes viewers behind the scenes to witness the care, professionalism, and integrity with which election workers carry out their duties.

The film gives voice to election officials from across the country—from rural conservative regions of Florida and Ohio to urban Detroit, Michigan, and statewide election administration in Wisconsin—highlighting their shared experiences and challenges.

The Brennan Center for Justice reported in May 2024 that a majority of election officials expressed serious concerns about their personal safety. The Officials captures this reality while affirming the essential role these workers play in upholding democracy.

“Election officials from the Secretary of State's office to the State Board of Elections and local canvassing boards and workers deserve our gratitude for their dutiful work. This film highlights their dedication to upholding the law and the process,” said Nancy McLean, League organizer of the event.

This event is free and open to the public. All community members are encouraged to attend and join in a thoughtful conversation about protecting our elections and the people who make them possible.
