On February 15, the House Constitutional Laws Subcommittee of the Judiciary Committee will take up H. 3676, a “Convention of States” bill with the specific focus of passing a balanced budget amendment to the U. S. Constitution. This bill is a threat to every American's constitutional rights and civil liberties. The League opposes a federal budget amendment, although we support fiscal responsibility.

Important bills affecting voting and elections are scheduled for the Constitutional Laws Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, January 25, at 9 AM in the Blatt Building, Room 516. We are especially asking constituents of subcommittee members to reach out to their House members to SUPPORT instant runoff or ranked choice voting and to REJECT bills that unrealistically and substantially increase the administrative burden on county election offices.

Every day, the freedom to vote is under attack. Since the Supreme Court decision of Shelby County v. Holder that gutted the Voting Rights Act (VRA), at least twenty-nine states have passed ninety-four laws that make it harder to vote, with the burden falling hardest on Black voters and other voters of color.

More than 100 years after some women gained the right to vote, women in the US continue to face inequities based on sex and gender. Despite the significant advances made in recent decades, there have also been enormous roadblocks to progress and devastating steps backward. Please add your name to this petition urging Congress to protect women’s rights to vote, ensure that the ERA is added to the Constitution, and restore reproductive freedom for all.
