Urgent! Extreme abortion ban advances to the SC Senate calendar.

S.1095, a total abortion ban with no exceptions for incest or rape, passed out of Senate Medical Affairs on April 21 and has moved to the full Senate calendar.

If passed, people who seek abortion care and the providers who offer it could face jail time. It could also put access to birth control and in vitro fertilization (IVF) at risk.

We are confident objections will be filed, so it can’t be considered without special order. This requires a 2/3 vote. Call your senator and tell them to vote no on S.1095

 

What is S.1095? 

S.1095 combines the extreme criminalization of abortion that we saw last fall in the failed total abortion ban S.323 with the restrictions on medications used in abortion that are embedded in H. 4760, which has been sent from the House to the Senate.
 
S.1095 is a near total abortion ban that would remove existing exceptions for rape and incest, limit access to medication abortion, and increase penalties for providing abortion care.
 
It would replace the medical and moral judgment of those who are pregnant with that of ideologically extreme legislators. 
 

Take action

1. Call your Senator and and ask them to vote no on S.1095. Personal calls from constituents are the most effective means of influencing legislators!

Talking points 

  • Everyone deserves to make their own decisions about their health care and their future. Politicians should not interfere with anyone’s medical decisions.
  • Health care workers should be able to deliver the medically accepted standard of care without fearing legal prosecution. They should not have to fear that a jury would find their assessment of “imminent threat” or “emergency” insufficient. This uncertainty in other states has already led to maternal deaths. 
  • Our First Amendment right to free speech includes information about abortion. Sharing information about abortion cannot be criminalized, whether it comes from a health care provider or other person. 
  • Lawmakers should be fighting FOR our freedoms, not against them.
