You must be registered to vote by May 12th to vote in the June Primaries. Register online at www.scvotes.gov. To register online, you will need your S.C. driver's license or identification card issued by the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and your Social Security number; it will only take a few minutes to complete the voter registration form. Once registered to vote, a voter registration card will be mailed to you in 2-3 weeks.

What is a primary? The primary is to select the Republican and Democratic party candidates for the November general election who will be running for Congress, the state legislature, and local offices such as County Council. A primary is necessary when multiple candidates from the same political party file for the same office. Reminder: you may vote in either party’s primary, but you will have to choose which one. There is no party registration in South Carolina.

What do I need to bring to vote?  You will need a Photo ID — Acceptable IDs include:

  • SC Driver's License - includes standard license and REAL ID
  • SC Department of Motor Vehicles ID Card - includes standard ID card, REAL ID and SC Concealed Weapons Permit
  • SC Voter Registration Card with Photo
  • Federal Military ID - includes all Department of Defense Photo IDs & Veterans Affairs Benefits Card
  • U.S. Passport - includes U.S. Passport ID Card

When can I vote?

  • Vote on election day. The election will be held at polling places throughout the county from 7 am to 7 pm. You can find your polling place by calling the election office at 864.898.5849 (Pickens County) or 864.638.4196 (Oconee County) or go online at www.scvotes.gov.
  • Early Voting - no reason required. This option is open to all registered voters of the county. Visit an early voting center in your county during the early voting period and vote in person like you would at your polling place on Election Day. Remember to bring your Photo ID when checking in to vote.

  • Absentee Ballot. Start the absentee process early by calling your county election office to request that they mail you an absentee ballot application. By sending your request for an absentee ballot early, you will ensure that the ballot will arrive, be returned and received by the elections' office before election day. In Pickens County, call 864-898-5948; in Oconee County, call 864-638-4196. Deadline for voters to apply for an absentee ballot for the primaries is May 31 at 5 p.m.

Why should I vote in the primary? Turnout is often low in the primary so your vote can make a difference. Often the winner of the primary has no opposition in the general election, so voting in the primary is your best chance to affect the result.

  • Print out a sample ballot for your location at www.SCVotes.gov or www.Vote411.org. Take the sample ballot with you to the polls when you vote. At www.Vote411.org you can also learn about candidates answers to questions about their background and views on public issues.
  • Check your voter registration and confirm your polling place at www.SCVotes.gov.
