Voter Registration

Voter Registration ActionTeam

A major League of Women Voters’ emphasis is good governance. The League of Women Voters of Oconee and Pickens Counties (LWVOP) contributes to this goal by educating the public about the importance of registering to vote and casting their ballot in elections. To carry out this work, we depend on League volunteers as well as the cooperation of local schools allowing us to talk with and register their students. We also visit nursing homes and set up booths at public events. We train our volunteers in how to register voters and we accept any amount of time they are able to offer. Many newer members find this activity a good way to meet other members.

GEARING UP VOTER REGISTRATION FOR 2024! JOIN US!

There will be opportunities for voter registration and voter outreach and now’s the time to join and learn from experienced volunteers.

The League of Women Voters of Oconee and Pickens counties Voter Registration Team needs your help and your ideas on how to achieve our goals for voter registration. We need all hands-on deck! We’ve got to get it right this year. Our Democracy is on the line!

Our goals are:

  1. To increase voter registration in Oconee and Pickens counties.
  2. To focus on registering younger voters and women, and to reach out to minority communities and areas where registration and turnout is low.
  3. To expand to areas beyond where we currently hold voter registration activities.
  4. To educate voters on issues important to them, thus, building relationships with communities.
  5. To build support for the work of the Voter Registration Team.

Opportunities to get involved:

  1. Become a volunteer to participate in voter registration activities. Training will be provided. If new, you will be matched with an experienced person.
  2. Encourage other league members to volunteer.
  3. Suggest and help with events: at festivals, churches, women’s groups, civic/community organizations, social clubs, community meetings, new apartment complexes, retirement homes, ethnic grocery stores, libraries, breweries, etc. This will help meet our goal #3.
  4. Identify a contact person with whom the team can work to organize a voter registration activity.
  5. Organize an event with support from experienced team members.
  6. Help with creating training documents and handouts.
  7. Become a member of the Voter Registration Team.

This is a grassroots effort and it is going to take all of us, as a League, to meet our goals. Wherever your strength lies, your help in any of the areas mentioned above is appreciated! Please contact Carol Asalon at carol.asalon [at] furman.edu for questions or to tell me you are ready to take part in this endeavor. Together we can accomplish anything!

VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVES HELD IN 2023

This past year, our league had several successful voter registration drives.

  • Students were registered to vote at high schools in both Pickens and Oconee counties and Tri-County Technical Colleges. Students were not only registered to vote but we discussed issues that impacted their lives, discussed the importance of their vote for candidate's that support those issues, and provided resources for them to become educated voters.
  • There was a successful Voter Registration Drive at Clemson University, Reeves Football Complex. This generated interest among the football players to vote and generated many good questions.
  • Sometimes just our presence, our banners, and our handouts are a big help in furthering how critically importanct voting is, e.g., the Seneca Juneteenth celebration in which we participated. This informal festival atmosphere encouraged a lot of productive conversation between festival attendees and League members.

We look forward to servicing both counties  as we register voters this spring. All members are welcome to join us.
