Protect Our Vote John Lewis

SAFE (Safe, Accessible & Fair Elections) Action Team

An increasing number of people found their way to League membership in 2020, most citing their reason for joining as concern about the state of US Democracy. In response, the League formed a committee called SAFE – safe, accessible and fair elections. The 12-15 members who joined the early fall 2020 meetings identified the two areas in which they wanted to focus:

  • Stay current on national, state and local election issues, and election-related legislation, and disseminate it to members and the public.
  • Support County Election Commissions and Election Office Directors in their work to further secure, accessible and fair elections.

Skills and Knowledge members of the Committee gain and use include:

  • Much greater understanding of the Congressional and SC legislative process: how to find, read and follow legislation; how to make our voices heard by contacting legislators, preparing testimony, and communicating to the public; and how to advocate in concert with LWVSC and other local leagues.
  • Appreciation and understanding of the County Election Commissions and Election Offices. Attending County Commission meetings as a valued citizen organization and speaking as appropriate, recruiting volunteers to assist at election times in a variety of needed roles. Additionally, increased understanding of the role of the State Election Commission as an important watch guard of safe and fair elections.

This group meets primarily when action is needed to support County Election systems and to address Voting System and Rights legislation. ALL are Welcome!!
