Voter Registration and Civic Education

Voter Registration ActionTeam

A major League of Women Voters’ emphasis is good governance. The League of Women Voters of Oconee and Pickens Counties (LWVOP) contributes to this goal by educating the public about the importance of registering to vote and casting their ballot in elections. To carry out this work, we depend on League volunteers as well as the cooperation of local schools allowing us to talk with and register their students. We also visit nursing homes and set up booths at public events. We train our volunteers in how to register voters and we accept any amount of time they are able to offer. Many newer members find this activity a good way to meet other members.

VOTER REGISTRATION AND CIVIC EDUCATION FOR 2025
JOIN US!

There will be opportunities for voter registration and civic education
and now’s the time to join and learn from experienced volunteers.

The League of Women Voters of Oconee and Pickens counties Voter Registration Team needs your help and your ideas on how to achieve our goals for voter registration. We need all hands-on deck! Our Democracy is on the line!

Our goals are:

  1. To increase voter registration and civic education in Oconee and Pickens counties.
  2. To focus on registering younger voters and women, and to reach out to minority communities and areas where registration and turnout is low.
  3. To expand to areas beyond where we currently hold voter registration and civic education activities.
  4. To educate voters on issues important to them, thus, building relationships with our communities.
  5. To build support for the work of the Voter Registration Team.

Opportunities to get involved:

  1. Become a volunteer to participate in voter registration and civic education activities. Training on voter registration will be provided. If new, you will be matched with an experienced person.
  2. Encourage other league members to volunteer.
  3. Suggest and help with events: at festivals, churches, women’s groups, civic/community organizations, social clubs, community meetings, new apartment complexes, retirement homes, ethnic grocery stores, libraries, breweries, etc. This will help meet our goal #3.
  4. Identify a contact person with whom the team can work to organize a voter registration and civic education activity.
  5. Organize an event with support from experienced team members.
  6. Help with creating training documents and handouts.
  7. Become a member of the Voter Registration Team.

This is a grassroots effort and it is going to take all of us, as a League, to meet our goals. Wherever your strength lies, your help in any of the areas mentioned above is appreciated! Please contact Carol Asalon at carol.asalon [at] furman.edu for questions or to tell me you are ready to take part in this endeavor. Together we can accomplish anything!

2024 VOTER REGISTRATION AND CIVIC EDUCATION RESULTS

Here’s what we did in 2024:

  • Visited Pickens and Oconee High Schools: distributed posters with voter registration information, held voter registration events and provided voter education presentations.
  • Held voter registration events and provided voter education handouts at Clemson University, Tri County Technical College at Easley and Pendleton, and at many local events.
  • Reached out to retirees, minority groups, and inactive voters through mailings and calls.
  • Created Social Media Posts for LWVOP Facebook and Instagram that included voter information and registration reminders.

Here are our results:

  • Number of Volunteers: 51
  • Poll worker applications requested by High School students: 25*
  • Total Registered: 138
  • Total contacts through mailing and calls: 5,604
  • Total contacts at all other events: 1,392
  • Total contacts: 6,996

*Poll worker application requests increased considerably compared to 2023. Students are participating in the political system. This is exciting news!

Our mission is voter registration, and it is always ongoing.  We learned that voter education and participation are needed. We successfully shared voter education and information with nearly 7,000 residents within Oconee and Pickens counties.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who volunteered. We could not have accomplished any of this without each of you! We look forward to servicing both counties as we register voters and provide civic education. All members are welcome to join us!
