Our November First Tuesday Talk will be on Election Day and will focus on politics and lobbying in the upcoming Virginia General Assembly session. Sheila Herlihy of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy will talk about her organization’s advocacy for issues such as education, health care and prison reform.

This highly regarded nonprofit engages people of belief and goodwill in advocating for economic, racial, and social justice. 

Ms. Herlihy, Faith Organizing Director for VICPP, will discuss social issues such as prison reform that will be coming before the 2025 General Assembly. The League frequently works with the Center on lobbying legislators when we have similar positions on issues such as education, health care, and the right to vote.

Sheila Herlihy Hennessee (she/her) is a professed Secular Franciscan who values dignity, simplicity, and peacebuilding. She works as the Director of Faith Organizing for the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. There, she focuses on engaging congregations and the general public in the work of justice, as well as advocating policy around affordable housing at the state level. Before moving to Richmond, Sheila worked at a bilingual church where she coordinated fifteen ministries, including advocacy and community organizing efforts. She has spoken at retreats and conferences in both English and Spanish on affordable housing, welcoming immigrants, and justice as integral to faith. Sheila is passionate about building bridges with diverse communities, whether among diverse language groups, faith traditions, or political persuasions.
