Activities and Volunteer Opportunities

Sussex LWV is all about joining in! You can take part in your League in several areas:

  • Voter Services - The Voter Services committee provides resources to Sussex County residents to encourage civic engagement and participation in the elective process. Our goal is to increase Sussex County voter turnout to improve our representative democracy because "Democracy cannot be a spectator sport." The committee's outreach programs include voter registration and voter education opportunities to give residents the tools they need to feel empowered and make informed election decisions. We hold voter registration events at area high schools, DelTech, and local events around the county. As a member of the Voter Services Committee, you will be trained to register voters and can then volunteer to work at these events. For further information, contact Lyn Brown at lwvscde.voters [at] gmail.com. 

  • VOTE411.org - VOTE411 provides valuable information on candidates running for office, including school board and general elections. Voters can see what's on their ballot, check their voter registration, find their polling place, and see what the candidates have to say about their own platforms. Voter Services committee members work with LWVDE to provide current information to VOTE411 and provide important "election information that you can use" in both English and Spanish.

  • Candidate Forums - Our Candidate Forums team expects a busy year in 2026. Sussex LWV coordinates and presents nonpartisan public forums where candidates answer voter questions live (and livestreamed). In the 2024 general election season we coordinated five forums featuring candidates in some of the most closely watched districts in the county, including the first gubernatorial forum to be held in Sussex County. In 2025, we continue to support local elections such as the Milton Mayoral and Council Elections. With midterms coming up, we need your help more than ever! Each forum requires about 20 volunteers to help set up, staff the information table, register guests, manage questions, time the candidate responses, help with livestreaming, and more.   • Membership Committee -Most of our members seek active involvement, as their time permits, in the hard work required for our organization to thrive and fulfill its mission. The Membership Committee helps to promote the mission of our League in the Sussex community and works to support a committed and involved membership base. Committee members attend annual conferences at the local, state. and/or national levels, and develop social events on pertinent topics for members and the public. They help shape the Sussex LWV program by informing the Board of member interests and concerns. And they participate in cultivating and growing the Sussex LWV membership  new and existing LWVSCDE members through personal outreach.   • Communications - The Communications Committee's job is to amplify the League's message to inform our communities about the power and importance of one of our most fundamental rights: the right to vote. Externally, we create and share content to support the League's message and promote the organization and our work. Tasks include writing articles for our website or local media; Researching, creating, and sharing content across our social media channels; designing and developing materials such as brochures, flyers, palm cards, and more. Internally, we work to maintain effective communication among our existing membership. Tasks include editing our monthly "Leading as the League" newsletter; issuing email blasts or digital invites for upcoming member events; and publishing content to our website and social media.   • Social Policy — The League’s Social Policy Mandate is to “Secure equal rights and equal opportunity for all. Promote social and economic justice, and the health and safety of all Americans.” The urgency for an active social policy agenda stems from significant developments at both the state and federal levels, many of which directly impact our mission to secure equal rights and promote informed civic participation. The League of Women Voters of Sussex County, Delaware, recognizes the importance of staying informed about social policies, especially those that disproportionately affect historically marginalized communities. These include proposed legislation that may suppress voter participation or undermine access to essential resources such as food, housing, and healthcare. Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion calls us to engage with these issues through an equity lens—ensuring that our advocacy reflects the lived experiences of those most impacted.
