The work of Joann Kingsley of Delaware's Community Legal Aid Society Inc. (CLASI) was highlighted in a Spotlight Delaware article published on December 11, 2024, discussing how poll accessibility has improved for Delaware voters with disabilities. LWV is proud to have assisted in this work, providing volunteers to help with polling place observations related to the project.
In an email and social media posts linking to the article, Kingsley thanked the more than 50 volunteers who observed and gathered polling place accessibility information during the 2024 general election. In addition to UD and Widener students and staff, Kingsley called out the League of Women Voters amongst the organizations who helped in the effort:
Much appreciation as well to the other organizations whose members (and their family members!) volunteered: the League of Women Voters, Children & Families First, National Federation of the Blind in Delaware, and of course to my many colleagues here at CLASI – not only in the Disabilities Law Program, but the many others across all of our other programs and senior management – for their support, terrific social media presence, and guidance in preparing and carrying out the whole exercise.
LWVDE Elections & Voting Chair Jill Itzkowitz affirms the partnership: "A key principle of the LWV is to facilitate voting for all eligible citizens, so we were very supportive of CLASI’s efforts to ensure that polling places were accessible to voters with disabilities."
Both LWVDE and CLASI are among the member organizations of the Delaware Voting Rights Coaltion (DVRC), which is currently engaged in a multiyear Every Vote Counts campaign to amend the Delaware state constitution to remove unnecessary restrictions to voting and registration, in order to improve voting access for all Delaware citizens.
