LWV on Redistricting

Congressional districts and government legislative bodies should be apportioned substantially on population. We oppose partisan and racial gerrymandering that strips rights away from voters.

People Powered Fair Maps™  is a national redistricting program of the League of Women Voters focused on creating fair political maps nationwide. Fair Maps was announced in September 2019. The program includes actions in all 50 states + D.C.

10 Things You Should Know About Redistricting
Every 10 years, after the collection of the decennial census data, states redraw their state and congressional district lines. These districts determine how communities are represented at the local, state, and federal levels. The redistricting process is fundamental in influencing how our government works for us.

LWVUS seeks to improve, protect, and influence redistricting processes and create a roadmap for the future. LWVDE is engaged in the LWVUS 50-state plus DC. People Powered Fair Maps advocacy program that aims to:
      • Promote a fair and representative redistricting process in 2020.
      • Create state-based campaigns to influence, engage, and educate members of the public, community partners, lawmakers, and the media in the creation of fair maps.
We are passionate about redistricting because it's about political power -- power that is often wielded in an underhanded way. The effects of redistricting can be subtle, long-lasting, and removed from an immediate, visible impact, so it can be challenging to explain, much less empower, communities to get involved.

This year we have a chance to make sure our communities are represented more accurately and equitably. We’re joining with the @LWVUS to get more people informed and involved in the redistricting process.
